Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

This is closer to what is correct, and there is latitude in this matter: if he recites some remembrance, he is doing well; and if he pronounces the takbirs without any remembrance, he is doing well.

His statement, “Allah is Most Great, greatly so”: the word “greater” here is unrestricted, and it is well known that, when unrestricted, it conveys perfection more strongly than when qualified. That is, if you say, “Allah is greater than such-and-such,” it becomes qualified; but if you say, “Allah is Most Great,” it remains unrestricted—meaning greater than everything, no matter how great one may imagine it to be. Allah is Most Great, exalted is He. To Him belongs all majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. The seven heavens and the seven earths are in His grasp like a mustard seed in the hand of one of us. Thus, whatever a person may imagine, Allah is greater than all things.

As for qualifying it, there is no doubt that this detracts from the conception of perfection conveyed by this expression. Thus, some textbooks for young children state: “Allah is greater than your father, greater than the television, greater than the room.” If you tell a child, “Allah is greater than the television,” he will imagine Allah’s greatness only within the room. This is a grave error and may undermine sound creed. These are children who can conceive of things only according to what they see; their minds are not yet mature.

Therefore, students of knowledge should examine educational curricula. No one should belittle his own contribution, but neither should he speak until he has presented it to someone more knowledgeable than himself, so that the matter may be clarified. Let us cooperate and assist those responsible in such matters, for they may assign the task to someone who does not make such careful assessments and who thinks this is the style suited to a child’s mind. It is true that it suits his mind in the sense that you associate one thing with another that he understands. But with regard to the Lord, exalted is He, do not train his mind to associate the Lord with anything from among created things, lest he fall into an abyss.
