Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

“And in the second unit, before the recitation, five …”

His statement, “And in the second unit, before the recitation, five,” means that in the second unit of prayer he says five takbirs before the recitation. This does not include the takbir for rising, because the takbir for rising occurs before one has fully stood upright and therefore is not counted. Thus, after standing, he says five takbirs. This is why he said, “And in the second unit, before the recitation, five”—that is, after he has fully stood upright.

As for the takbir made when rising from prostration, it takes place before one has fully stood upright. We have previously noted that the established position of the school is strict on this issue: they say that if one completes the takbir after having stood upright, the takbir is invalid. Therefore, the takbir must occur between the beginning of the movement and its completion. We have also previously explained the disagreement on this issue, and that there should be latitude in the matter: if one begins the takbir before standing fully upright and completes it after standing upright, there is nothing wrong with that.

The evidence for these additional takbirs is that it is reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did this. (1) Its chain of transmission is sound, as stated in al-Rawḍ. However, if one differs and makes them five in both the first and second units, or seven in both the first and second units, in accordance with what has been reported from the Companions, Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, differed regarding the takbirs, and all of it is permissible.” That is, Imam Ahmad held that there is latitude in this matter, and that if a person says the takbirs in a manner other than this, from what has been reported from the Companions, then he

(1) This is based on the report of Amr ibn Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather: “The Prophet made twelve takbirs: seven in the first [rak'ah] and five in the other.” Narrated by Imam Ahmad (2/180), Abu Dawud (1152), and Ibn Majah (1278). Al-Hafiz stated in al-Talkhis (p. 692): “Ahmad, Ali, and al-Bukhari—according to what al-Tirmidhi reported—declared it authentic.”
