there is no objection to holding more than one Friday prayer. However, this is conditional upon reconciliation being impossible. If reconciliation is possible, then they must be reconciled and united behind a single imam.
It is not considered a need if the imam lets his garment hang below his ankles or is sinful. For the Companions prayed behind al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf (1), who was among the most severe of people in oppression and aggression: he killed scholars and innocent people, yet they prayed behind him. Indeed, the correct view is that a sinful person may serve as imam, even for prayers other than Friday, unless his sin entails neglecting a condition of the prayer which he himself considers to be a condition. In that case, we do not pray behind him. But if he neglects a condition of the prayer which we consider to be a condition while he does not consider it such, then this causes no harm.
An example is that we consider eating camel meat to invalidate ablution, whereas the imam believes that it does not invalidate it. If he eats it without renewing his ablution and then leads us in prayer, we pray behind him, because this is a matter of juristic disagreement.
“If they do so, then the valid one is that which the imam himself conducts, …”
His statement, “If they do so, then the valid one is that which the imam himself conducts,” means: if they hold the Friday prayer in two or more places without any need, then the valid one is that which the imam himself conducts and authorizes. When the scholars say “the imam,” they mean the one holding the highest authority in the state. This is because the universal imam ceased to exist once conflict arose among the caliphs at the beginning of the Umayyad caliphate, and the Islamic ummah, regrettably, became a collection of small states. Thus, if the Friday prayer is held in more than one place without need, the valid one is that which the imam himself conducts—that is, the one in which he prays, whether he is leading the prayer or praying behind another. In earlier times, they would not pray the Friday prayer except
