The response is that this line of reasoning is unsound. Although Allah’s saying, “O you who believe,” [Surah al-Jumu‘ah 62:9] is in the plural, what is intended is the category as a whole. This is why one is commanded to attend the Jumu‘ah prayer even if he is alone.
The fourth view is that three people are stipulated: a preacher and two listeners. They cited the following evidence:
-
Three is the minimum number denoted by the plural.
-
Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasa’i narrated from Abu al-Darda’ that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whenever there are three people in a village among whom the prayer is not established, Satan has overcome them.” (1) Prayer here is general and includes Jumu‘ah as well as other prayers. Thus, if there are three people in a village among whom the prayer is not established, Satan has overcome them. This indicates that the Jumu‘ah prayer is obligatory upon three people. We cannot say that it is obligatory upon three, and then say that it is not valid when performed by three, for making it obligatory upon them and then saying that it is invalid is contradictory. It would mean that we have commanded them to do something invalid, and commanding something invalid is forbidden. This view is strong, and it was the choice of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him.
The fifth view is that Jumu‘ah is obligatory for two or more, because
