- Combining the prayers was legislated solely to make things easier for the legally accountable person; therefore, whatever is easier is preferable.
The same applies to the sick person. If it is easier for him to bring the night prayer forward and pray it with the sunset prayer, that is preferable; but if the reverse is easier for him—delaying the sunset prayer until the night prayer—then that is preferable.
Question: When combining prayers because of rain, is it preferable to combine them in advance or to delay them?
Combining them in advance is preferable, because that is easier for the people. This is why, when it rains, people only combine the prayers in advance.
This is according to the view that combining because of rain is limited to the sunset and night prayers. But according to the view that it applies generally to both the sunset and night prayers and the noon and afternoon prayers, delaying them may sometimes be easier.
You should understand that the author does not mean that, once combining becomes permissible, it must necessarily be either combining in advance or delayed combining. Rather, once combining is permitted, the two prayer-times become a single time. Thus, one may pray the two combined prayers during the time of the first prayer, during the time of the second, or at any point in between. As for the common assumption that combining is permissible only during the time of the first prayer or the time of the second prayer, it has no basis, as mentioned previously, because whenever combining is permitted, the two prayer-times become a single time.
Some scholars have made an exception for combining at Arafah, saying that combining in advance is preferable there, while at Muzdalifah delayed combining is preferable. But this has no basis, because combining at Arafah in advance is easier for the people than delaying it: the people cannot be kept together until the time for the afternoon prayer, while they wish to disperse to their stations and supplicate Allah. Thus, combining in advance is undoubtedly easier for them,
