The second view is that it is permissible for a traveller to combine the prayers, whether he is staying in one place or travelling onward.
They cite the following evidence:
-
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, combined the prayers during the expedition of Tabuk while he was staying in one place. (1)
-
The apparent meaning of the hadith of Abu Juḥayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, recorded in al-Bukhari and Muslim: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was staying at al-Abṭaḥ during the Farewell Pilgrimage. One day he came out wearing a red suit, led the people in prayer, and prayed two units for noon and two units for afternoon.” (2) They said: the apparent meaning of this is that the two prayers were combined.
-
The general wording of Ibn Abbas’s hadith that the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, “combined the noon and afternoon prayers, and the sunset and night prayers, in Medina without fear or rain.” (3)
-
If combining the prayers is permissible because of rain and similar circumstances, then its permissibility for travel is all the more warranted.
-
It is difficult for a traveller to perform each prayer separately at its prescribed time, whether because of hardship, lack of water, or some other reason.
