Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

And You are exalted …

His saying, “You are exalted,” is derived from taʿālī (loftiness), and the additional ta conveys emphasis regarding His exaltedness.

Allah’s exaltedness is of two kinds: exaltedness of His Essence and exaltedness of His attributes.

As for the exaltedness of His Essence, it means that Allah Himself is above all things.

As for the exaltedness of His attributes, it means that Allah, Most High, is described by every attribute of perfection.

The first of these was denied by the indwelling Jahmiyyah and their followers, who claimed that Allah is, by His Essence, in every place. It was also denied by those who went to extremes in negating Allah’s attributes, saying: Allah is neither above the universe nor below it; neither to its right nor to its left; neither before it nor behind it; neither connected to it nor separate from it. Thus, He would be non-existent!

For this reason, Mahmud ibn Subuktigin (1), may Allah have mercy on him, denounced whoever described Allah in this manner, saying, “This is non-existence.” (2) And he spoke the truth, for this is indeed non-existence.

(1) He was the ruler Yamin al-Dawla, Conqueror of India, Abu al-Qasim Mahmud ibn Sebuktegin al-Turki, lord of Khurasan, India, and other lands. Al-Dhahabi said: “He was inclined toward athar (textual tradition), though he was among the Karramiyyah.” Ibn Taymiyyah said: “He was among the finest rulers of the eastern lands in Islam, intellect, religious commitment, jihad, and governance.” He was born in 361 AH and died in 421 AH in Ghazna. See: Bayan Talbis al-Jahmiyyah, 2:331; al-Siyar, 17:483. (2) This occurred when Ibn Furak and Ibn al-Haydam debated before him concerning al-uluww (Allah’s exaltedness above His creation). Seeing the strength of Ibn al-Haydam’s argument in affirming al-uluww, he regarded it as preponderant. He said to Ibn Furak: “If you wished to describe what is nonexistent, how could you describe it more aptly than this?!” Or, he said: “Distinguish for me between this Lord whom you describe and what is nonexistent!” See: Ibn Taymiyyah, Dar' Ta'arud al-Aql wa-al-Naql, 6:253.
