Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

As for the other congregants, if they possess the same knowledge as the two who alerted him, they must separate from the imam. If they do not separate from him and instead follow him, then the matter requires further consideration: if they do so deliberately, their prayer is invalid; but if they do so forgetfully, it is not invalid. They must perform the prostrations of forgetfulness if they have missed anything of the prayer. If they do so out of ignorance that the additional action is extra, or out of ignorance of the ruling, their prayer is not invalid.

It is understood from his statement, “nor of one who separates from him,” that he should not sit and wait for the imam, because he considers the imam’s prayer invalid, and it is not possible to follow someone in an invalid prayer. At times, however, the imam may stand for what appears to the congregant to be an additional unit, when it is not in fact additional—for example, because the imam forgot to recite al-Fatihah in one of the units and thus performs a replacement for the unit in which he omitted its recitation. In this case, the congregant waits for him so that he may conclude the prayer with him.

If it is asked: How can the congregant know that this is the case?

The answer is that the imam’s insistence on continuing his prayer despite having been alerted makes it most likely that this is the case. If, however, the congregant proceeds on the basis that the default assumption is that this unit is additional and concludes the prayer, there is no blame upon him.

The categories of those who follow the imam in an additional action are:

  1. Those who believe that he is correct.
  2. Those who believe that he is mistaken, yet follow him while knowing that he is mistaken.
  3. Those who follow him out of ignorance of the mistake, ignorance of the legal ruling, or forgetfulness.
  4. Those who separate from him.
