But the correct view is that it must be recited in every rak‘ah.
The evidence for this is as follows:
-
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to the man who performed his prayer improperly: “Then do that throughout your entire prayer.” (1)
-
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, consistently recited it in every rak‘ah, and he said: “Pray as you have seen me praying.” (2)
Accordingly, the preponderant view in this matter is that reciting al-Fatihah is an essential pillar in every rak‘ah and for every worshipper. The only exception is that which we mentioned concerning what is indicated by the hadith of Abu Bakrah, may Allah be pleased with him. (3)
Bowing and rising from it, …
His statement, “and bowing”: this is the fourth pillar. Bowing is for one to bend his back, and its description has previously been explained in the discussion of the manner of prayer. The evidence that it is a pillar is as follows:
-
The saying of Allah, Most High: “O you who believe, bow and prostrate.” [al-Hajj 22:77] Thus, Allah commanded bowing. It is well known that we are not legislated to perform bowing by itself; therefore, since bowing in isolation is not prescribed for us, the verse must be understood as referring to the bowing performed in the prayer.
-
The Prophet’s statement, peace and blessings be upon him, to the man who performed his prayer improperly: “Then bow until you are at ease while bowing.” (4)
-
The Prophet’s consistent practice of it in every prayer, and his statement: “Pray as you have seen me praying.” (5)
