Al-QuburIbn Abi al-Dunya
  1. My father narrated to me—Musa ibn Dawud narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, the steward of the family of al-Zubayr, from Salim ibn ‘Abd Allah, from his father—who said:

While I was travelling between Mecca and Medina on my mount, and I was ⦗95⦘ carrying a water-skin slung from my shoulder, I passed by a graveyard. Suddenly a man emerged from his grave, engulfed in flames, a chain round his neck which he was dragging. He cried out, “Servant of Allah, sprinkle! Servant of Allah, sprinkle!” By Allah, I do not know whether he actually knew my name or whether that is simply how people address one another. Then another man came out and said, “Servant of Allah, do not sprinkle! Servant of Allah, do not sprinkle!” He jerked the chain and forced him back into his grave.
