Al-QuburIbn Abi al-Dunya
  1. He said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn al-Yashkurī recited to me:

What will you say, when you have no plea to offer,
once the spoiler of every pleasure has reached your door?
What will you say when you are summoned yet give no reply,
when you are interrogated while drowning in agony?
What will you say when your own rulings carry no force
concerning the estate you leave behind?
What will you say when you arrive at a dwelling
whose folk the trustworthy do not deem trustworthy?

He added: A man chanted these verses in the presence of one of the judges. The judge began to weep and kept repeating, “What, do you suppose, will he be able to say?”
