8. Muḥammad narrated to me; ʿUmar ibn Saʿd narrated; Nuhaim al-ʿAjali narrated; from a man of Basra, who said:

“I was present with al-Hasan at a funeral. The people gathered around him, and he said:

‘Prepare for a day like this, may Allah have mercy on you. Those who have been carried ahead are your brothers; you are following close behind. O you who linger after your brother! It is you who will die tomorrow before the one who remains after you, and the one who remains after you will die in your wake—one after another—until every last one of you arrives. Death has encompassed you all, making you equal in its pangs and agonies, until you have all taken up residence in the graves. Then you will all be raised up, and then you will all be presented before Allah in fearful awe.’

He then drew a deep breath and collapsed unconscious.
