5- Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Sulaymān al-Ḥarashī narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Shumayṭ told me; Ḥajjāj al-Aswad told me while we were attending a funeral in the open cemetery. He said, “I saw in a dream that I entered the graveyard, and there were the inhabitants of the graves, asleep inside their tombs, the earth having split open around them. Some lay sleeping on bare soil, others on fine Egyptian linen, others on satin and brocade, others on silk damask, and others on cushions of sweet basil. ⦗48⦘ Among them was one who slept with a smile upon his face, some whose complexions shone brightly, and others whose color had faded. I wept at the sight and said in my dream, ‘Lord, had You willed, You could have made them equal in honor.’ A voice then called out from among those graves: ‘O Ḥajjāj, these are the stations earned by deeds.’ I awoke at that word, shaken.”
