- Muḥammad narrated to me; Dāwūd ibn al-Muhabbar narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Khāṭṭāb reported: “I was present with al-Ḥasan at the funeral of Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿAṭṭāridī. After the people had shaken the soil from their hands, al-Ḥasan stood for a while and then said, ‘As for you, Abū Rajāʾ, you have found relief from the sorrows and toil of this world. May Allah grant you in death a long repose.’ He then turned to al-Farazdaq and said, ‘Abū Firās, keep something like this ever in mind, for you and we are coming right behind him.’ Al-Farazdaq wept, and then he recited:
‘We are no more secure than they, except that we remain
A little while after them, while they have gone on ahead.’
٤٤- حدثني محمد ثنا داود بن المحبر ثنا عبد الواحد الخطاب قال شهدت الحسن في جنازة أبي رجاء العطاردي فلما نفضوا أيديهم عنه من التراب وقف الحسن مليا ثم قال أما أنت يا أبا رجاء فقد استرحت من غموم الدنيا ومكابدتها فجعل الله لك في الموت راحة طويلة ثم أقبل على الفرزدق فقال يا أبا فراس كن مثل هذا على حذر وإنما نحن وأنت بالإثر قال فبكى الفرزدق ثم أنشأ يقول
ولسنا بأنجا منهم غير أننا ... بقينا قليلا بعدهم وترحلوا
