40. Muḥammad narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Sinān al-Bāhilī narrated to us; Salām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ said:

“I was present with Qatādah at a funeral, and he did not speak a single word until the procession dispersed. I was present with al-Ḥarīrī at a funeral, and he wept continuously until the people parted. I was also present with Muḥammad ibn Wāsiʿ at a funeral: he kept his index finger pressed to his lips, his head covered, eyes lowered, never turning right or left, until the people went away without his even noticing them. Afterwards I approached him; he looked to the right and left, and when he saw no one, he stepped toward the grave, spoke a few words, and then departed.”
