- Muḥammad narrated to me; Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us; Qaṭarī al-Khashshāb said, “We attended a funeral at which al-Shaʿbī and the leading figures of Kufa were present. Once the deceased had been buried, al-Shaʿbī declared, ‘Death is the ultimate limit awaiting every servant in this worldly abode.’ His statement caused the people to weep.”
٣٨- حدثني محمد ثنا جعفر بن عون ثنا قطري الخشاب قال شهدنا جنازة وفيها الشعبي وأشراف أهل الكوفة فلما دفن الميت قال الشعبي هذا الموت غاية العباد في دار الدنيا فأبكى بكلمته الناس.
