268 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me: Zayd ibn Aslam told us; a colleague of ours from Basra related:
A man once paused by a grave that had been finely constructed and began to marvel at its elegance. That very night someone came to him and stood nearby; he saw a man whose facial features had been worn away, and the man said:
“You were impressed by the grave and its graceful design,
yet the body within has been consumed by decay.
Question the dead about their condition,
and they will tell you how every adornment has slipped away.”
Then he turned and walked off. I followed him until he entered the cemetery, came to that very grave, and slipped into it before my eyes.
