265 – Muḥammad ibn al-Mughīra al-Tamīmī related to me; Sunaid ibn Dāwūd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUyaina, the brother of Sufyān ibn ʿUyaina, said:

“We attended the burial of a man, and one of the sages was with us. When the earth had been leveled over him, the sage said, ‘O so-and-so! You are now alone, handed over to what awaits you. We have departed and left you, and even if we had stayed by your side we could not have helped you at all.’

He then turned toward the graves and said, ‘O inhabitants of the graves, this morning you are filled with remorse. How astonishing we are—and how astonishing you are!’”
