262 – I heard one of our companions relate: when Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf captured a certain city in Yemen, he found at its gate a stone on which, in musnad (ancient South-Arabian) script, the following was engraved:
“The kingdoms of cities spread across the horizons lie desolate;
They have become ruins, and the house of death has raised their walls.
Where are the kings who paid no heed to their allotted share,
Till the cup-bearer of death served them its fatal draught?”
