Al-QuburIbn Abi al-Dunya

208 – Muḥammad narrated to me; Ḥakīm ibn Jaʿfar narrated to me; ʿAmr ibn Sayf al-Makkī said: “One day I set out for al-Ṭāʾif, but my mount veered off the road. I came to a spring, and there, beside the water, was a newly made grave in a desolate spot where scarcely anyone passed save a shepherd or a stray traveller. Written on the grave were the words:

‘May Allah have mercy on the one who wept for a stranger, now forgotten;
The dust of the grave has covered his face, wiping away beauty and grace.’

By Allah, I wept that day until I vomited.”
