190 – Muḥammad ibn al-Mughīra al-Tamīmī related to me: I found in my grandfather ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn Yazīd al-Ḥanafī’s notebook a report transmitted by al-Shamālī, stating that a man once went out for a stroll in Medina and suddenly heard a voice issuing from a grave, chanting these lines:
“Here is Abū Nāqid, come to visit us—
how welcome his early call upon our home!
The choicest dead the graves enclose;
hasten to us, O ʿUbayd, and walk this way.
He affirmed Allah’s oneness through long, patient years;
for that profession he has been granted bracelets of gold,
and in the Garden of Firdaws he dwells in splendid ease.”
I said, “I will not leave today until I know what that voice was ⦗155⦘ and who the deceased is.” Just then a funeral bier approached. I asked about the dead man and was told, “He is one of the Anṣār, from the clan of Banū Salima; this is his son ʿUbayd, and this is his daughter ʿUbayda.” They buried him between the two of them and then departed.
