185 – He said: ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad recited to me these verses by Hudbah ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAdawī ⦗152⦘

Alas for a people handed over to calamities and the turns of time,
 and for the man who scorns his own soul while he is unaware!

How often the earth has ached for a righteous one,
 only to hide him beneath a gleaming, desolate tract of land.

The blows of fate spare neither the lord of eminence out of respect for his rank,
 nor the owner of broad estates, leaving him to poverty.
