Al-QuburIbn Abi al-Dunya

180 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me; he said: Abū Isḥāq related:

I attended the funeral of one of my brothers fifty years ago. After he had been buried, the soil leveled over him and the people had dispersed, I remained by some of those graves, pondering all that the dead had once possessed in this world and how completely it had been cut off from them. Then I recited:

Peace be upon the occupants of those time-worn graves—
as though they had never sat in convivial gatherings;
never once tasting a draught of cool water,
nor eating of food, whether fresh or dry. ⦗150⦘

He said, “By Allah, my eyes were overcome with tears, so I rose and left, heavy-hearted.”
