Al-QuburIbn Abi al-Dunya
  1. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qurashī narrated to us. Al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Abī al-Ṣaḥbāʾ al-Taymī transmitted from Suwār ibn Muṣʿab al-Hamdānī, from his father, regarding two neighboring brothers of his. Each cherished the other with a devotion seldom equaled. The elder journeyed to Isfahān; when he returned, he found that the younger had died. For nine months thereafter he kept visiting his brother’s grave. When his own end drew near, a caller suddenly cried out from behind him: ⦗56⦘ O you who weep for another, Reform your own soul and do not mourn him. The one for whom you shed your tears— Soon, soon, very soon you shall tread the same path. He turned, but saw no one there. A shiver ran through him and fever overtook him. He went back to his family, survived only three days, and died. He was buried beside his brother, and each occurrence of the word “soon” corresponded to a single day of his remaining life.
