178 – He said: al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān recited to me these verses by Hudayyah ibn al-Haytham al-ʿAdawī ⦗149⦘:
“Come, give me drink before the dirge-singers start their wailing,
before the last breath heaves within my chest.
And before tomorrow—alas for my soul at what tomorrow brings—
when my companions set out and I am left behind.
When they depart, tears streaming from their eyes,
and I am abandoned in the earth, laid in a niche beneath the slabs.
They will ask, ‘Have you put things right for your brother?’
but a grave in the open plain can never be set aright.”
