137 – Muḥammad narrated to me; Saʿīd ibn Khālid ibn Yazīd al-Anṣārī narrated to me; from a man of Basra who used to dig graves. He said: ⦗127⦘
“One day I had just finished digging a grave and was resting my head beside it when, in a dream, two women came to me. One of them said, ‘Servant of Allah, I appeal to you by Allah: turn this woman away from us—do not let her be buried next to us.’ I awoke in fright, and there before me was the funeral bier of a woman that had just been brought. I said to the people, ‘The grave you need is behind you,’ and I directed them to another plot.
That night the two women appeared to me again in my sleep. One of them said, ‘May Allah reward you well on our behalf; you have spared us from enduring a great evil.’ I asked, ‘Why does your companion not speak to me while you do?’ She replied, ‘This woman died without leaving a waṣiyyah (bequest); it is the due of anyone who dies without a waṣiyyah that he—or she—remain unable to speak until the Day of Resurrection.’”
