132 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me; Khālid ibn Yazīd al-Qassām related to me; al-Rabīʿ ibn Ṣubayḥ narrated: When Thābit al-Bunnānī passed away, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, Jisr Abū Jaʿfar and I went down into his grave. After we had placed him in the lahd (side-niche) and begun to arrange ⦗122⦘ the bricks over him—Ḥumayd standing by his head—he looked and did not find him in the grave. He motioned to us, and we signalled back, “Do not put the people to trial.” We then covered him with earth and returned.
Later, Ḥumayd went to Sulaymān ibn ʿAlī and told him what had taken place. That night he set out secretly, opened the grave, and again did not find him there; he levelled it over and went back.
At daybreak we came to his daughter and asked her about what had happened. She said, “It seems to me you have made him leave his grave.” We said, “Indeed—but how is that?” She replied, “I shall tell you. For fifty years he would supplicate Allah in his prayer during the pre-dawn hours, saying, ‘My Lord, if You have granted anyone the ability to pray in his grave, then grant it to me.’ Allah—if He wills—would never turn away such a supplication.”
Al-Rabīʿ continued: Jisr said, “By Allah, besides whom there is no god, I saw him last night in my dream wearing green garments, and he was praying in his grave.”
