115 – Azhar ibn Marwan al-Ruqashi narrated to us; Tammam ibn Baziʿ al-Saʿdi narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Kaʿb al-Qurazi said:
“I came to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz when he was Caliph. As I entered, I kept staring at him. He said, ‘O son of Umm Kaʿb, you are looking at me in a way you never did in Madinah.’ I replied, ‘Yes, O Commander of the Believers; I am amazed at how much of your flesh has wasted away, how your color has changed, and how thin your hair has become.’ He said, ‘What, then, if you were to see me three days after I am laid in the grave, my eyeballs collapsed onto my cheeks and pus and worms coming out of my nostrils and mouth? You would find me even more repulsive.’”
