114 – Abu Bakr al-Madani narrated to us; Ibn ʿUfayr narrated to us; Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated from Ibn al-Had, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, from al-Huwayrith ibn al-Dabbab, who said:

"While I was at al-Inabah, a man suddenly emerged from a grave. Flames were leaping from his face and head, and he was shackled in an iron collar. He cried out, ‘Give me water! Give me water!’ A second man came out after him, saying, ‘Do not give the disbeliever any water.’ He caught up with him, seized the ends of a chain, overturned him, and then went back ⦗110⦘ until both of them re-entered the grave together.

My she-camel panicked and I could not control her until she swerved toward ʿArq al-Zibya and finally knelt down. I dismounted, performed the Maghrib and the late-night (ʿIsha) prayers, then rode on until I reached Madinah at daybreak. I went to ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab and informed him of what I had seen. He said, ‘O Huwayrith, by Allah, I do not suspect you, yet you have told me something grave indeed.’

ʿUmar then sent for a number of elders from the outskirts of al-Safra who had lived through the pre-Islamic era, and he summoned al-Huwayrith as well. He said, ‘This man has reported something to me, and I do not doubt him. Huwayrith, tell them what you told me.’ So he related it to them. They said, ‘We know this, O Commander of the Believers. The man you saw was from the Banu Ghifar and he died in the Days of Ignorance.’ ʿUmar asked them about him, and they replied, ‘O Commander of the Believers, he was a man of the pre-Islamic period who recognised no right of the guest.’"
