and he unraveled it for him (1) in the briefest time (2).
I add: The riddle to which Shaykh ʿAlam al-Din referred was versified by the eminent shaykh, the distinguished scholar Rashid al-Din Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Masʿūd al-Farqī (3). In it he concealed a name, highlighted its qualities, compressed the wording, and yet rendered its meaning elusive. It is as follows (4):
What three-letter name is there whose first third
is its own likeness, while the second third is twice the whole?
The final third is a substance in which
all accidents combine—marvel, then, at its ingenuity!
It is a triangle whose root is again its likeness;
and when it is squared, its quadrature becomes plain.
(1) The word “lahu” is absent in MS K.
(2) From this point up to the phrase “Ibn ʿAbd al-Salam” (p. 23) is missing in MS Q.
(3) (d. 689 AH). His biography is given in al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, “Deaths of 689 AH,” pp. 376–381, and in al-Safadi, al-Wafi bi-l-wafayat, 22:129–131. Al-Safadi reproduces the entire riddle—calling it well-known—and notes that Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya solved it on the word ʿilm in about one hundred lines, the first of which reads:
Bi-ghaziri ʿilmin wa-imtinanin wasiʿin | alghazta ʿilman fi fununin wasiʿah
This line is the seventh in the reply by Ibn Taymiyya that the author cites here. Al-Safadi also mentions the riddle briefly in Aʿyan al-ʿAsr, 1:246.
I add: The grammarian Ibn al-Khushshab (d. 567 AH) composed a poem known as al-Qasidah al-Badiʿah al-jamiʿah li-ashtat al-fadaʾil—around 112 lines—containing questions that, it is claimed, no scholar could answer. According to its transmitter, Ibn Taymiyya read it and said: “The questions it contains can be answered, but I have no leisure to do so.” See the notes of our teacher, the scholar ʿAbd al-Rahman al-ʿUthaymin, on al-Maqsad al-Arshad, 2:10–14, where samples are reproduced; from him we learned this point.
(4) The phrase “wa-hiya hadhihi” (and it is this) is not found in MSS F and K; MS B has “fa-qala” (so he said) instead.
