Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

Had the mourners truly done justice to his loss, they would have wept blood—blood that overflowed from the torrents of their eyelids.(1)

He was a youth who, by his nightly litanies, turned the miʿrāj into a ladder to everlasting bliss, climbing it in the depths of darkness.

How often did his arguments take on a stubborn opponent—only for that adversary to shrink back the moment he pressed forward.

How many a dissenter did his judgments restrain from prying into the faith, so that once they conceded, they embraced Islam in full.

Religious piety itself donned a robe of spotless purity through your virtues, counting it unlawful to seek any protector but you.

You chose what remains when every mortal thing perishes, and from that bargain you reaped the richest profit.

You have now met the deeds you sent ahead—every act of goodness, every generosity that flowed from your hand.

On the Day of Gathering each soul will find its cherished treasures, while the one who was most criminal among men will be repaid in full.

You refrained from striving for high offices out of lofty self-restraint, and rarely has anyone of your calibre in our own days stepped forward to attain them.(2)

Upon the edifice of Islam you raised a pillar and a stout brace, and glory itself bent to kiss its hand and wrist.

With unwavering resolve you upheld the lance of the religion and quenched the fire of idolatry, leaving it in darkness.

Contentedly you bore every harm, and in magnanimity you turned away from the deeds of your enemies.

Against the people of heretical innovations you brandished keen swords that sliced through every tether of unbelief.

You stood unflinching on the day of combat with a courage that would send the finest Indian blade back chipped and broken.

When champions wept in fear for their tribes, you laughed, baring a smile in the thick of battle.

And when the radiant light of your bier shone forth, the Daughters of the Bier longed to be shattered in grief.

The Pleiades themselves wished to descend to the earth, scattering their stars upon you in homage and exaltation.
