Another elegy, composed by a different poet:
Mankind has been bereaved of blessings and noble virtues;
They have lost the radiant splendours of exalted knowledge.
With the death of that ocean of learning, that erudite master
Who traversed every science, charting its paths and proofs,
I mean Taqi al-Din, the unequalled one of his time—
Indeed, he embodied every virtue in practice.
Now the honoured grave has received his knowledge;
How marvellous that a tomb can contain an overflowing sea!
Any seeker of his learning had no need to press with many questions (1);
Nor did he ever encounter a petitioner whom he turned away.
He was a pillar of exhortation in its entirety,
A profound ocean should you wish to consult him.
And whenever he saw you, he would certainly be the first to begin—
Greeting you with warmth and kindly inquiry.
O Lord, have mercy on him, and soak his soil
With Your gracious rain, time and again.
O Lord, grant the same to every friend who loves him,
And to whoever resides in hope beside the Imam’s grave.
O Lord, have mercy on us, and on every escort
Who prayed over him or approached to kiss him farewell.
Whoever once delighted in him and in his knowledge,
Now finds sorrow swiftly come.
May God purify his resting-place, by His bounty at all times,
And increase the showers of mercy that pour upon it.
Thereafter, peace be upon the Chosen Prophet,
The highest of creation in station on the Day of Return,
And upon all the Companions and the Family alike,
And the Successors, both the last of them and the first.
Finished.
