He also composed the following to show how the companions failed to stand by the Shaykh when the calamity swelled and war broke out:
I sifted through the ranks of the elect with careful scrutiny,
Discerning the states of the companions in thoughtful reflection.
In peacetime, whomever you met among them
You found professing love, claiming their loyalty was sound.
Yet when the crisis descended, I looked for a trusted brother—
One who would step forward when fortune (1) turned its back—
But I met only reproachers, wearied and displeased;
I saw nothing but abusers, feigning sober judgment.
So when I was certain of their withdrawal,
I struck their names out with the lizard’s slash: “lā ilā” (2).
Finished.
He also said, about those who—out of ignorance—voiced reproach for loving him and following him:
Whether the talebearers blame or excuse, it is all the same;
They possess neither real insight into him nor the faintest report.
They censured love for him in ignorance, without understanding,
And scolded in hostility, unaware of their wrong.
Had they seen his radiant beauty with their own eyes, as I behold it,
They would have softened their blame and ceased.
Had his fair qualities been unveiled to them, and had they witnessed what I have witnessed,
They would have been struck with awe.
But ever since his brilliance first shone forth, a veil covered their sight;
They turned away from him and did not look.
Finished; all praise belongs to Allah alone, and may Allah bless Muhammad and his family.
