Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

You pleased your Lord when you ascribed His Speech to Him in truth, with not a trace of hesitation. Likewise, you affirmed His exaltedness and His rising over the Throne, without probing into the how or imposing any limitation. You upheld the report of our Creator’s descent to the lowest heaven (1) during the night, exactly as the sound, well-authenticated hadith relates.

You enumerated the Divine Names without the slightest leaning toward the distortions and deviations others had contrived. You repeated the reports and Qur’anic verses on the attributes again and again, just as the trustworthy transmitters had conveyed them with meticulous care.

You championed the creed of Ahmad, the guiding Prophet, and by defending his Sunnah you yourself are divinely aided. You upheld the school of Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal, that firm, patient Imam who bore harm—so blessed are you, O Ahmad! You clarified his straight path⦗2⦘, showing that from the moment it appeared it has been the most upright and rightly guided. You revived the memory of his ordeal and took his place in your own age, chagrining your detractors and filling them with grief.

So praise your God, for He is your Helper, and rejoice, for the Prophet Muhammad stands beside you—the Chosen, the pure, the elect, the Hashimite, the noble master of Abtah, the lord of all. He is the best of creation, the noblest to have set foot upon the earth, the most righteous of all those sent, through whom people find guidance. May Allah bless him for as long as the ring-doves coo and sing upon the highest branches at mid-morning; and likewise bless his noble Companions, his family, and all who follow his guidance and are thereby guided.

All praise belongs to Allah, whose bounty is all-embracing; and praise—⦗3⦘ it is the finest and most emphatic utterance.

It is complete; all praise is due to Allah alone.

(1) MSS F and D read: “hadhihi as-sama” (this heaven). The margin of D cites another copy that supports the adopted wording. (2) F has “al-nabi” (the Prophet), whereas H reads “al-nabawi” (Prophetic). (3) The base manuscripts show a blank; K likewise leaves it blank and notes this in the margin. T supplies “afdalu” (best). The margin of D proposes: “perhaps: ahaqq ma yuqalu (the most appropriate thing to say),” and beneath it records: “afdalu.”
