O you who are the object of my supplication and of my devotion—
whose praises waft with a fragrant scent (1),
unto the lofty court of your presence my heart forever comes and goes,
a guest continually arriving and departing.
By your life!—if tomorrow my portion from Allah, in His final abode,
were to be like what I enjoy with you in this world,
“then that would indeed be a fruitless return.”
He (may Allah have mercy on him) also composed the following in his praise:
We thank Allah with sincerity and praise Him;
we ever magnify Him and affirm His oneness.
In His abundant favor (2) we seek refuge and take shelter;
to Him we hasten, humble and diligent in service.
By His help we charge and seek aid against the foe,
for apart from Him we have no deity to worship.
To Him belong praise and glory—for He is worthy of both—
and to Him belong majesty and everlasting permanence.
The Protector has favored us, in an age grown languid,
with a youth who refines our religion and sets it straight:
I mean Taqi al-Din, a consummate master
who fortifies the pillars of the noble Sacred Law;
a scholar, scrupulous and exacting,
whose rank outshines even Suhā and the Pole Star;
one who offered up his precious soul (3) for the sake of Allah Himself,
and whom no threat could ever dismay.
