Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

The unshackler of glory—by exalting you—condensed for me (1)
a course of guidance that leads with the wake-up call of earnest counsel.

O true mainstay of every imitator, the one who fully satisfies
whatever he seeks, the one who suffices him and enriches him.

O ultimate end of those who long for protective care:
you embrace every conduit of knowledge and goodness.

O sufficiency of all who pursue right guidance, granting them
openings of the unseen sent down from the Creator Himself.

You reduced the masters of verse to helplessness, and they confessed
their inability to fathom the core of what you began to unveil. (2)

By Allah—how much dead learning you revive
after the passage of days had all but folded it away!

How many fortresses of error you level by force,
how many deviant pronouncements you render void!

You laid bare the corruption of what they had declared lawful for themselves,
pronouncing it forbidden, not merely mildly disapproved—

an instance of dayātha (3) (shameless lack of protective honor),
where the destitute man parts with his coin from his own palm in hope of a return.

In this very age you have risen in earnest to champion the truth,
uplifting it and refuting the claims of its adversaries.

O proof of Allah in these times for all that exists,
from the farthest reach to the nearest!

O you whom the Lord of the Throne fashioned as a herald to guidance
through the subtlest of means;

O solver of our difficult, intractable problems
with the bright, radiant light of your fatwas.

(1) Manuscript F has: “akhass” (more specific). (2) In manuscript F, the upper margin of p. 178 notes before this verse: “Completed; he also says, ‘he mentions the abasement of the opponents﵀’.” The note should in fact precede the words: “If they act hypocritically toward him …,” as will be shown below. (3) Manuscripts F and K read “al-diyana” (religion), whereas the printed edition (T) preserves the adopted wording, which is probably correct. In these two verses he alludes to the issue of nikah al-muhallil (a contrived intermediate marriage intended to restore a woman to her first husband). Shaykh al-Islam authored a separate treatise on the matter entitled Bayan al-Dalil ‘ala Butlan al-Tahlil (Demonstrating the Invalidity of the Halala device).
