He, may Allah be well-pleased with him, also said:
O you whose keen insight surpasses that of every discerning mind,
Lord of noble qualities, abundant favors, and countless gifts, (1)
O you whom I befriend both in secret and in public—
reproach me not for my withdrawal from the people of this age, (2)
nor for my estrangement from family and homeland.
You whose love has become my very creed,
and by whose trailing hem I ever find support:
be my advocate, that I may never fall to my enemies tomorrow;
and do not blame me if I awaken
alone in existence, without companion or shelter.
How hard one such as I strives to hide his restlessness (3)
from the tale-bearers, to conceal the burden he carries;
yet if my tears disclose my secrets, they are justified,
for within me is a longing such that,
were Radwa to bear it, the mountain would melt with anguish
or wither away in annihilation. (4)
Still, my heart—though its expanses have narrowed
because its limbs are laden with affliction—
harbours a rival passion that never leaves it;
and in my thoughts dwell two confidants with whom I trade
all that besets me, so I understand what I complain of, and it understands me. (5)
Absorbed in him to the exclusion of all others,
I care nothing for the caprice of time, whether tyrannous or kind.
