He commanded what is universally acknowledged as right, never for any selfish share (1);
and from Allah’s servants he warded off all that is repugnant.
He remembered Allah at every moment,
keeping far from frivolity and misguidance.
He died for Allah—patient, confined within a prison—
on a Monday; his inner state was plain for all to see.
The righteous undertook his washing and burial:
his face shone white as he was laid in the earth.
When he arrived, shrouded and borne upon men’s shoulders,
delegations from every people converged.
I cried out, overwhelmed by what met my eyes: “Gently!
For you now possess eternity in the Eternal Garden.”
Ah, what a calamity—every sound mind was shaken
and skins shuddered in dread!
O Ibn Taymiyyah, peace be upon you
in every moment that passes and every moment that returns.
O son of ʿAbd al-Ḥalīm, your forbearance soars;
O son of ʿAbd al-Salām, your gracious bounty overflows.
O Imam of the sciences, who now will issue the fatwas?
Who will untie the knots—whose scholar’s ink will benefit? (2)
For grasping the Book and the transmitted reports you were an ocean,
ever striking the mark, ever sound.
O cheerful one to all who sought benefit (3),
blessed is he who plucked of your fruit.
Every hour spent listening in your company
was, in truth, an altogether new life.
Would that I knew! Will the days we shared with you
ever appear to us again, or return? (4)
Sweet be your soil, sanctified your spirit,
and may you be granted the bliss of whatever you desire.
All praise belongs to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
