Among the pieces included here is this poem by Shaykh ʿAbd Allah ibn Khidr ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, of Rūmī stock, a Damascene from the Ḥarīrī quarter, known as al-Mutayyim—may Allah have mercy on him (1):
They have scorched my heart with the fire of love,
and my very core has melted from the parting of the beloved.
My passion and yearning for their sacred abode have only increased;
longing and burning desire have set my spirit trembling.
How immense are my sorrows and the rapture I feel for them!
How long my yearning for them, how bleak my loneliness.
I have filled every quarter with my lament—and why should I not
mourn for a people who were the best of neighbours (2)?
I have never forgotten the days spent in their nearness;
when they departed, the sweetness of life departed with them.
