Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

And why should the earth and sky not weep for the loss of a man whom nothing in all creation could ever distract from Allah (1)?
Even if the whole world were to shed tears—and that would still fall short—for he had been its one and only, the tie that held it together.
Now she stands bereaved, receiving consolation for his passing; after him every calamity seems light in her eyes (2).
Were it not that we seek the divine reward, our graceful patience would have looked blameworthy; yet patience is indeed beneficial (3).

Among these elegies is one composed by our colleague Burhān al-Dīn Ibrāhīm, son of the previously mentioned Shihāb al-Dīn—may Allah have mercy on them both (4):

(1) F and K read: “did not cut it off.” (2) The base manuscript has: “hafat”; the printed edition (T) reads: “halat.” (3) After this line F and K add several verses absent from the archetype; they run as follows: “His pulpit—were it not for the profusion of his exhortations—  would long ago have been scorched by the tears shed upon it. Still, concerning Ibn Taymiyya, the young master,  the imam Taqi al-Din Ahmad, much remains unsaid. Was he not a sun whose rising horizons sought to behold?  When it set, those very horizons concealed him. His noble learning was the beauty-spot on Syria’s cheek,  a seal upon that honoured face. A guiding star for wayfarers when they journeyed,  a radiant full moon rising in the darkest nights. Now it has vanished—the full moon is gone—and no lightning  gleams over Syria to cheer the sky-watcher. Syria’s mouth has not smiled, so deep is its grief  for him, while tears still stream from its eyes. When the moon of night is absent, the world gives forth no light  even though the climbing stars should shine.” (4) F and K add: “An elegy [K: elegy] by Shaykh Burhan al-Din Ibrahim, son of Shaykh Shihab al-Din Ahmad b. Abd al-Karim al-Karast al-Ajami, lamenting Shaykh Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya in Jumada al-Akhirah 735 AH; he was born at the beginning of 697 and died in Ramadan 735.” The preceding poem was likewise ascribed in F and K to this Ibrahim b. Ahmad. It is clear that he was a contemporary of the author, although I have found no biographical notice for him.
