Among the eulogies is a poem by the erudite shaykh, Mujir al-Din Abū al-ʿAbbās Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Baghdadi—later of Damascus—the tailor, may Allah have mercy on him: (1)
Eyes were humbled in awe before your bier
when streams of light shone forth upon it. (2)
Around it the noble angels circled in companies,
and the righteous formed a halo about it. (3)
The Lord of the Throne wrapped him in dazzling radiance,
so that it seemed daylight itself was overlaid by another day.
From the Muslim community gathered round his couch
there rose a lofty supplication to the Lord of heaven. (4)
Tears—born of their reverent, submissive hearts—
poured in torrents down their cheeks. (5)
They travelled on with him borne high upon their shoulders, (6)
their fingertips supporting the bier from right and left.
A broad, gentle shade of the All-Merciful’s mercy (7)
enveloped them, along with serenity and solemn dignity.
Oh, how many eyes, their waters surging like waves—
while within their breasts sorrow fanned a blazing fire!
