May God sanctify his soul and water the grave that shelters him with the copious showers of the clouds (1).
For he was a rarity among the people of his age, a perfection adorning the brightest of days (2).
Among the eulogies are these lines by the judge-scholar Zayn al-Dīn Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn al-Muẓaffar ibn ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Fawāris ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Wardī al-Maghribī, a Shafiʿi grammarian—may Allah have mercy on him— (3):
The hearts of people are harsh and overbearing,
showing no eagerness for the loftiest aims (4).
(1) F reads: “qabruhu min talat” (“his grave is among the hillocks”).
(2) The base manuscript has al-anam, which is a scribal corruption. K then adds: “tammat, wa-l-hamdu li-llahi rabbi l-ʿalamin, waʿadduha thalathuna baytan” (“Finished—praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds; its total is thirty lines”). After this, F and K insert a lengthy qasidah by a soldier stationed in Egypt; it will be reproduced here after several other poems.

قلوبُ الناس قاسيةٌ سِلاطُ ... وليس لها إلى العليا نشاطُ (٤)
