Methodology of Verification
I have already explained the editorial procedure in other works I prepared under this blessed project, with Allah’s permission; what I said there applies here as well, although I shall mention what is specific to this book:
By Allah’s grace we obtained a set of manuscript copies of the work. The oldest is the Köprülü copy in Turkey, written fourteen years after the author’s death; upon it the text was primarily established, and we departed from it only when a clear error or an omission that distorted the wording was evident.
The Paris copy (B) agrees with the archetype in many places, as does the Jerusalem copy (Q); it is therefore likely that these manuscripts derive from a single exemplar.
I have recorded the variant readings of the other manuscripts in the footnotes, together with any additions unique to them, unless the text required their inclusion, as stated earlier. The copies labeled (F) and (K) usually concur, although the points where they differ indicate that (K) was not copied from (F).
As for the copies kept in the Library of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca (H) and the King Saud Library (D), I consulted them whenever a difficulty arose or to verify the correctness of a particular word or the like, and I recorded their variants in the footnotes only in a few instances; both are transcriptions that, for the most part,
