Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

“He loves them and they love Him” (Al-Māʾidah 5:54), and “Those who believe are more intense in their love for Allah” (Al-Baqarah 2:165). He likewise says, “It is only those of His servants who have knowledge that truly fear Allah” (Fāṭir 35:28).

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—supplicated: “I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of every deed that brings me closer to Your love.” (1) He also said: “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much; you would go out to the highlands crying out to Allah.” (2)

It is well known that people differ in their stations of love and awe: one level is higher than another, and one share more elevated than the next. Let each of us, therefore, set his aspiration on the loftiest peaks of love and awe, satisfied with nothing short of their summit and crests. Paltry ambitions settle for the barest portion, whereas lofty ambitions rise with every breath toward nearness to the Beloved; nothing beneath that distracts them, even should it count among the virtues. A discerning person is never content with what is merely preferable when a superior state lies within reach.

⦗q 106⦘ Let our aspiration be apportioned between securing the outward ranks and attaining the inward stations, for it is unjust to pour one’s effort into externals while neglecting those lofty objectives whose lights shine resplendently.

And let each of us (5) set aside, by night or by day, a span of time to draw apart with our Lord—glorified be His Name—

(1) Related by al-Tirmidhi, no. 3235, and by al-Hakim, 1/521, through the narration of Muadh. Both al-Bukhari and al-Tirmidhi graded the hadith as hasan sahih. (2) With this exact wording the report is found in al-Tirmidhi, no. 2312; Ibn Majah, no. 4190; Ahmad, no. 21516; and others, on the authority of Abu Dharr. Al-Tirmidhi judged it hasan gharib. Without the sentence “you would have gone out …,” it is recorded by al-Bukhari, no. 1044, and Muslim, no. 901, from Aisha. (3) MS B reads: “its highest part, nor its apex.” (4) MS K reads: “qarib.” (5) MS K reads: “jamʿan.”
