Al-Uqud al-DurriyyaIbn Abd al-Hadi

Al-Muqātilī(1) wrote to me, reporting that the affront had been committed by a jurist(2) in Egypt named al-Bakrī(3), who showed gross disrespect. Later the man was sought out and declared wanted,(4) and a number of people interceded for him, while the Shaykh neither spoke about the matter nor lodged any complaint. Had he voiced even a single grievance, that person would have been humiliated(5) to the utmost degree; yet he said, “I do not seek retaliation for myself.”

The Shaykh remained in the Egyptian lands for some time after this.

(1) He is Uthman ibn Balban Fakhr al-Din al-Rumi al-Muqatili al-Dimashqi (d. 717 AH), a contemporary of al-Dhahabi; cited in Muʿjam Shuyukh, 1:433. See also al-Durar al-Kamina, 2:439. (2) The words “min faqih” (from a jurist) are missing in MS F. (3) MSS F, K, and T corrupt the word to “bi-l-mubdi.” The person meant is al-Bakri: ʿAli ibn Yaʿqub ibn Jibril al-Bakri, Nur al-Din Abu l-Hasan, an Egyptian Shafiʿi (d. 724 AH). He composed a rebuttal of Shaykh al-Islam on the issue of istighatha (seeking relief); Ibn Kathir remarked, “His case is like a feeble, turbid brook crashing against a vast, clear sea, or a grain of sand trying to move a mountain—people of sound mind only laugh at him.” Shaykh al-Islam answered him in his book al-Radd ʿala al-Bakri, also known as al-Istighatha. Al-Bakri later had another incident with the sultan, who almost put him to death. See al-Durar al-Kamina, 3:139-141; al-Bidaya wa-l-Nihaya, 18:246-247. (4) The base manuscript and MS B read as in the text; MS F has “wa-tawarrada,” while MSS K, T, and al-Muqtafi read “wa-tawaddada.” The form preserved in the base text appears to stem from the root w-d-r: wadara-hu tawdīran (“he plunged him into ruin”); fulan wuddira (“so-and-so was made to disappear”); wuddara-hu al-amir (“the ruler exiled him”). See Asas al-Balagha, s.v. w-d-r, and al-Taj, 7:587. Dr. al-Islahi suggests it may be a corruption of “nudiya ʿalayhi” (it was proclaimed against him), with ʿalayhi omitted. (5) MS F adds: “uhina ʿala dhalik” (he was humiliated on that account).
