He then set about devising yet another plot, and what befell you in Greater Syria was deeply disturbing: disquieting events, stifling anguish, tremendous tribulation, and humiliation. In his desperation he sought to win the sympathy of people who had never before paid him any heed, proffering wealth, pledging lives, and humbling himself abjectly (1) until some of the brethren were moved to pity for them—only to be sternly rebuked. It was said to him, “And do not let compassion for them overtake you in Allah’s religion” (Qur’an 24:2). There followed many other ordeals and afflictions (2) that defy description.
Accordingly, we beseech the Almighty Allah to hasten the completion of His vengeance (3) against them, to cut them off root and branch, to relieve His servants and His lands of their presence, to grant victory—over them—to His religion, His Book, His Messenger, and His believing servants (4), to inspire us to give thanks for this favor, and to perfect it for us and for all the believers.
Our conduct is no secret to you:
If a man’s fine traits delight your view,
then live them—so the same shines forth from you (5).
For at the gates of glory and noble aim
no sentinel stands to bar your claim (6).
