in the Fire, and one will be in Paradise: namely, those who are upon what I and my Companions are upon.” (1)

Thus, this creed is the one transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions; they, and all who follow them, are the Saved Sect. It has been authentically reported from more than one Companion that he said, “Faith increases and decreases.” (2)

Everything I have mentioned on this subject is related from the Companions with sound chains—whether verbatim or in meaning—(3) and the fact that some who came later differed does the matter no harm. (4)

I say: (5) not everyone who disagrees over some point of this creed is necessarily doomed, (6) for the disputant may be a mujtahid who errs, and Allah will forgive him (7) his error. He may simply not have received, concerning that issue, the knowledge that would establish the proof against him, or he may have

(1) Reported by al-Tirmidhi (no. 2641) and by al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak 1/218, on the authority of Abd Allah ibn Amr. Al-Tirmidhi described it as “a mufassar hadith, hasan gharib.” It is also transmitted from several Companions, including Anas, Muawiya, Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abu Hurayra. Ibn Taymiyya judged the hadith sound and well-known in the Sunan and Musnads, while al-Iraqi held that its chains are strong. See al-Albani, al-Silsila al-sahiha, no. 204. (2) See al-Khallal, al-Sunna, 4/38–39. (3) Taf adds: “and its meaning.” (4) So in the base manuscript and Taf; B, Q, F, K, and T read “it harms me.” The word “that” is missing in F. (5) F and K read “I said to them,” whereas T and Taf add “then.” (6) F has “and it is not contrary in…,” while K reads “and not every divergence…”. (7) Not found in B, Q, or Taf.
