I later spoke with some of them outside that gathering,(1) and I showed one of them the creed compiled by Imām al-Qādir bi-Llāh,(2) which contains the clause: “It is the speech of Allah; it issued forth from Him.”(3) He hesitated at this wording.
So I said, “The Prophet ﷺ used precisely this expression: ‘No servants draw near to Allah with anything equal to that which issued forth from Him,’(4) meaning the Qur’an.”
Khabbāb ibn al-Arratt likewise said, “O dear one! Seek closeness to Allah by whatever means you can, for you will never draw near(5) to Him with anything more beloved to Him than that which issued forth from Him.”(6)
(1) Manuscript B reads: khataba ("addressed").
(2) Manuscript Tif reads: al-Qadari. This is Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn al-Muqtadir, the Abbasid caliph known as al-Qadir bi-Allah (336–422 AH). He was engaged in religious learning, wrote several works, and was praised for his piety and rule. Ibn al-Jawzi reproduces this creed in al-Muntazam, 9:303 (events of 433 AH). See also Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, 15:127–137.
(3) Copies F, K, T, and Tif include the words allati fiha ("which contains") followed by inna al-quran ("indeed the Quran").
(4) Reported by Ahmad (no. 22306) and al-Tirmidhi (no. 2911) on the authority of Abu Umamah. Al-Tirmidhi said: “This hadith is gharib; we know it only through this chain, and Bakr ibn Khunays was criticized by Ibn al-Mubarak, who abandoned him at the end of his life.” It is also transmitted mursal from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, recorded by al-Tirmidhi (no. 2912), al-Hakim (2:441), and others; al-Hakim declared it authentic.
(5) Manuscripts B and Q read: yutaqarrab ("one seeks nearness [to Allah]").
(6) Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (no. 30722); Ahmad, al-Zuhd, p. 35; al-Hakim, 2:441; al-Khallal, al-Sunnah, 6:104; and others. Their wording is: “is dearer to Him than His Speech,” and I have not found it with the wording “proceeded from Him.” Ibn Taymiyyah cites it in the same form in several of his works, including al-Istiqamah, 1:345, and Sharh al-Asfahaniyyah, p. 15.
