before the Tatars came to Syria. I had, prior to their arrival, voiced certain remarks long ago, and I became extremely angry; but (1) I recall saying, “I know that some people have slandered me and have conveyed various things to the sultan (2).” I also spoke words that I judged necessary, such as: “Who has championed Islam in times (3) of need other than I? Who has clarified its proofs, set them forth, fought its enemies, and restored it when it began to falter? At a time (4) when everyone else had forsaken it and (5) no one would articulate its evidences, and no one would strive…"
(1) Manuscripts Q, F, K, and T read: “lakinni” (but I).
(2) The shaykh probably meant that they had denounced him to the sultan, alleging that he was seeking the throne—just as Nasr al-Manbiji told Ibn Makhluf: “Tell the emirs that Ibn Taymiyya is a danger to the state, as Ibn Tumart was in al-Maghrib.” See al-Jamiʿ, pp. 322, 505, 544. In 702 AH some Sufis even forged a letter in his name claiming that he intended to overthrow the government together with certain scholars and commanders; the forger was arrested and given a severe punishment. See al-Jamiʿ, p. 414, and its Supplement, pp. 9–10. They tried a third time: Abu Hafs al-Bazzar relates in al-Aʿlam al-ʿAliyya (p. 783, appended to this book) that informers again accused the shaykh before Sultan al-Nasir. Summoned, the shaykh was told: “I have been informed that people obey you and that you aim to take the throne.” Unperturbed, he replied in a calm yet loud voice, heard by many present: “Me? By Allah, your kingdom and that of the Mongols together are not worth two farthings to me!” The sultan smiled at this; see the rest of the report there.
(3) Manuscripts F and K read: “fi awqat” (at times).
(4) Manuscripts B and Q read: “hatta” (until).
(5) The remaining manuscripts read: “falaa” (so not).
