(47) “And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites” ⦗al-Aḥzāb 33:47–48⦘. Then He said: “Follow what is revealed to you from your Lord; indeed Allah is well aware of all that you do (2), and rely upon Allah—for Allah suffices as Trustee” ⦗al-Aḥzāb 33:2–3⦘.
Thus He commanded him to adhere to what had been revealed to him of the Book and the wisdom—that is, his sunnah—and to put his trust in Allah.
Through the first (1) the declaration, “You alone we worship,” is fulfilled; through the second the declaration, “And You alone we ask for help,” is realized.
Similar is His saying, “So worship Him and rely upon Him” ⦗Hūd 11:123⦘, and His saying, “In Him I place my trust and to Him I turn” ⦗Hūd 11:88⦘.
Although this command covers every aspect of the religion, it is even more emphatic in jihad, for one must confront the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and that cannot be achieved without powerful support from Allah. For this reason jihad is the pinnacle of deeds and gathers at its summit all lofty spiritual states.
Within it lies the summit of love, as in His words: “Allah will soon bring forth a people He loves and who love Him—humble toward the believers, strong against the disbelievers, striving in the path of Allah ⦗Q 56⦘ and fearing no blame from any critic” ⦗al-Māʾidah 5:54⦘.
It likewise contains the summit of reliance and the summit of patience, for no one has greater need of patience and reliance than the fighter in Allah’s cause. Hence He said: “Those who migrated for Allah’s sake after they had been wronged—We shall surely settle them in this world…”
